The trade winds pile cloud against the north while the south stays clear. With a car you drive to whichever half is behaving that day. Without one you take the weather you were given.

Filling up here costs noticeably less than it does on the Spanish mainland or at home in northern Europe. Distance is not the thing to budget for on this island.

TF-1 south, TF-5 north, TF-21 over the top
Two motorways run the coasts and meet at Santa Cruz. Between them the TF-21 climbs out of Vilaflor through the pine belt and drops onto the crater floor at two thousand metres. Learn those three and the island stops being complicated.

TFS or TFN
Most northern European flights land at Tenerife South. Most mainland and inter-island flights use the north. Both have cars, and the north is the quieter collection.

The car rental pick-up points in Tenerife divide into two kinds: the two airports, which hand the car over in the arrival area, and the towns, where it is delivered to the address you give. The airports offer delivery too, so a car booked at Tenerife South can meet you at an address instead.

The deposit is on the car
Every listing carries its own deposit and its own cover level, and both are on the card before you book rather than quoted at handover afterwards. It is the number people are most often surprised by, so it is the one shown earliest.

What the cover leaves out
Standard cover here excludes the wheels, the undercarriage, the windscreen and the interior. Those are the parts a narrow Tenerife road actually threatens, which is why the cover is worth more of your attention than the day rate.

The card rule, before you travel
A physical credit card in the main driver's own name, and the licence card itself in Latin script. This is the single most common reason a collection goes wrong, so it belongs here rather than in the small print.

The price is the rental price
Prices in euros, with the deposit, the cover levels and any delivery charge on the listing rather than discovered at pick-up. Where a supplier allows a one-way route the fee is inside the price you are shown, and many cars cancel free, so booking early is an option rather than a commitment.
Two thousand metres before lunch.
The climb from the coast to the crater takes about an hour and you will pass through three landscapes doing it: banana terraces, then Canary pine, then a lava plain with nothing growing on it at all. Take a jacket. The temperature at the top is nothing like the temperature you left, and the way up is a decision in itself: two roads climb it and they are not interchangeable.

Do I have to leave a deposit?
It depends on the car, and you find out before you book rather than at pick-up. Every listing shows its own deposit, and a good number of them are listed at nothing at all. If you want only those, filter for them; we keep a page on how the no-deposit cars work and what you give up in exchange.
What do I actually need to bring when I collect?
Your licence as the physical card, in Latin script. Photos of it and app-based digital licences are not accepted. Bring a real credit card in the main driver's name too: depending on the supplier it may be required rather than preferred, and it is the single most common reason a pickup goes wrong. Debit is sometimes fine, but it has to be a physical, personalised card in the same name.
Can I collect at one airport and drop at the other?
Often yes. Open the drop-off tab in the search above and choose the other airport; if a supplier allows the route, the one-way fee is priced into what you see rather than added later, so one-way rentals and when they pay off is arithmetic you can do before you book rather than a surprise at the far end.
Is a small car enough for the mountain roads?
Yes, and it is usually the better choice. The TF-21 up to the crater and the TF-38 across the west are wide, sealed and gentle by mountain standards. The roads that punish you are the narrow ones like the TF-436 down to Masca, and there a small car is an advantage, not a compromise. What you should not do is take any of them onto an unsealed track, which every rental agreement on the island excludes.
How far ahead should I book?
Earlier than feels necessary in winter. Tenerife fills up between December and March, the cheap end of the list empties first, and prices climb rather than fall as the date closes in. Since many cars cancel free, an early booking costs you nothing to change your mind about.
